Meet the Artist behind our Art of St Andrews 2023 Release

Meet Jill Calder and the art piece for our 2023 Release

The artwork for our 2023 Release Single Malt, our latest addition to the Art of St Andrews Collection, has been created by Fife-based illustrator, Jill Calder.

Jill blends traditional and digital image-making methods as seamlessly as possible resulting in whimsical illustrations with broad appeal. As a result, her work is commissioned all over the world, bringing a little of the heart of the fife region to a global audience.

Meet Jill Calder

Jill Calder is an award winning illustrator and calligrapher who loves drawing, ideas, colour, ink, typography, stories, books, dogs and deadlines. Her previous work has included illustrating children's books. Jill studied at the Edinburgh College of Art and later at Glasgow School of Art, graduating in 1992.

The Art of St Andrews Collection

The Art of St Andrews is a collection of Single Malt releases created by our Head Distiller, Scott Ferguson. The outer box is adorned in the art piece of our chosen artist - this year we have collaborated with Jill. Previously, we have collaborated with Hilke MacIntye for our 2019 Release and Mairi Clark for our 2022 Release.

The Inspiration for the 2023 Release Single Malt

Jill and our Head Distiller Scott spent some time in St Andrews, discussing their favourite things about this cherished town. Jill was particularly inspired by the beauty of nature and this is reflected in the vibrant colours she used in her art piece, as well as in the various plants and animals that feature in her design. Scott took her to places he used to enjoy when he was a student at the university, recounting fond memories of bonfires with friends on castle sands.

The Art Piece

Within Jill's art piece, illustrations of our new distillery and the paper mill in Guard Bridge can be found, as well as the Eden estuary where our distillery is situated, and the local wildlife and fauna found in Fife are present.
